The idea of starting high school classes later in the morning was nothing new to Tampa Bay area educators when state lawmakers proposed it last spring.
Pinellas County officials explored making a change in 2018 but took no action, largely because it would cost too much. Pasco County parents suggested the concept in 2021, as the school board adjusted the schedule to cope with a bus driver shortage. But high school start times did not change.
Families in the area had some idea of what the shift might look like, as Hillsborough County altered its school start times five years ago, with high schools starting at 8:30 a.m. or shortly after.
