The City of Safety Harbor, with the help from the Florida Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program, was able to hire a local environmental monitoring company to inspect and catalog information on thousands of trees throughout the city. This information was then input into the G.I.S. software utilized by the city.
By tracking and cataloging information such as trees DBH (diameter at breast height), condition ratings, structural abnormalities, fungal growths, and/or rooting issues in large samples of trees we can start to better understand the larger impacts of events like climate change or major storms on the tree canopy as a whole. With this goal in mind the City of Safety Harbor partnered with the environmental monitoring firm RES (Resource Environmental Solutions, LLC), who helped in gathering this information.
The inventory was able to successfully inspect and catalog information on 1,500 trees throughout the city. City staff are looking forward to learning what they can from the information gathered by RES. City staff also plan on continuing monitoring the health of the city’s tree canopy in any way they can.
