At its Monday night meeting, the Safety Harbor City Commission got its first look at findings and recommendations for the Main Street corridor from Stantec/Cardno, the firm contracted by the city to do a Main Street Design Study.
The firm held meetings with the community and business owners, surveyed residents and business owners and completed a speed study of Main Street. Monday night, a representative of the firm provided results of the survey and meetings as well as its preliminary recommendations, which include:
- Reorientaing crosswalks so pedestrians and wheelchairs do not need to enter the road diagonally
- Replace a limited number of Main Street parallel parking spaces with cafe tables, wider sidewalks, low-speed vehicle parking and/or landscaping.
- Negotiating public-private parking agreements for business lots that are normally empty during peak parking times.
- Artistic gateways at the 10th Avenue and Philippe Parkway entrances to Main Street
- Replacing Washingtonian palm trees with cabbage palm trees or shade trees
- New wayfaring signage
Commissioners had a brief discussion about the findings, especially about keeping the tall Washingtonian palms at least at the entrances of Main Street.
A final report will be submitted to Commission in November, at which point Commission will begin what is expected to be a long process of deciding what suggestions to implement.
