At its Monday night meeting, the Safety Harbor City Commission voted 4-1 to place seven of the eight recommendations to change the city's Charter made by the Charter Review Committee on the March 2024 ballot.

The only recommendation Commission did not put on the ballot was adding term limits to Mayor and Commissioners, and that was the reason Vice Mayor Andy Steingold was the lone no vote, as he wanted term limits included.

The city's Charter is like its Constitution. Changes to it can not be made by Commission, and only can be made by a vote of the public. Every 10 years, the Charter mandates that the Commission appoint a Charter Review Committee to do a thorough review of the Charter make recommendations for changes.

One new addition to the Charter that will appear on the March ballot will be protection of Baranoff Park, which includes the iconic Baranoff Tree. If approved by voters, Commission would only be able to change the park's zoning designation or land use, or sell, lease or donate the park to another entity, after a citywide vote approving such.
